Astrology and Spirituality (Part 2)- The 9th House

In the previous post on Astrology and Spirituality- Part 1 the concept of spirituality was discussed in light of different fields of study.

Today's post discusses the concept of spirituality in the context of astrology. The focus will be on the 9th house of the horoscope covering the following sub-themes;

THE 9th HOUSE IN ASTROLOGY

The most popular and direct reference to spirituality in astrology comes in the context of the 9th house of the horoscope.

In Fundamental Principles of Astrology, K.S. Krishnamurti associates the 9th house with the guru or preceptor, worship, penance, virtue, prayer, spiritual initiation, fortune etc. In addition, he includes all matters related to spiritual welfare under the 9th house.

Through the descriptions of the 9th house one can understand the two facets of spirituality-

spirituality as philosophy

spirituality as a practice

In addition, the 9th house adds meaning to expressions like "being fortunate", "being blessed", "a spiritual temperament" etc.

Bhagya

The 9th house is called "bhagyasthana" and "bhagya" denotes fortunes, affluence etc. (BPHS, translation by R. Santhanam).

The meaning of Bhagya in the context of the 9th house is profound in the sense it would include good relationship with elders, getting the right medicine for ailment, receiving blessings from family etc.

The seeds of Fortunes

According to Krishnamurti, fortune and prosperity under the 9th house are seen as those accumulated as a result of meritorious deeds in the previous births.

Spirituality, the higher mind and expansion

In the context of the mind and mental processes, the ninth house is the house of faith and the higher mind. The "exclusiveness" of the 9th house comes from its association with spirituality while it manifests in matters of morality, higher learning, long distance travels, pilgrimage, pure reason, intitution and spiritual vision.🔥

Rudhyar associates the 9th house with expansion. He states that all activities that expand one's view of life would fall in the 9th house experiences.

Example, experiences with seers, prophets, fortunetellers, futureoriented statisticians, extrapolators, etc., also come within this ninth house field. (Dane Rudhyar).

In the words of Sasportas, the 9th house signifies what is known as ‘the higher mind’ – that part of the mind linked to the faculty of abstraction and the intuitive process.

Placements in the 9th describe something about the style with which we pursue religious and philosophical issues, as well as suggesting the kind of God we worship or the nature of the philosophy in life we formulate. The 9th house concerns the ‘whys and wherefores’ of existence. (Howard Sasportas, The Twelve Houses: Exploring the Houses of the Horoscope 2007).

Spirituality, Cosmic Law and Consciousness

The reference to "higher logic" of the 9th house represents the awareness of the higher/cosmic law and one's role in the cosmic order. ⛵ 🔯

In the words of Dane Rudhyar, the ninth house is very specifically the field of experiences which induces in us a deeper understanding and a greater expansion of consciousness.

These experiences give form to our appreciation and evaluation of social and cosmic processes. They deal with our attempts to generalize and communicate, no longer personal and environmental issues and concerns, but what affects all men and the universe as a whole. What the 9th House of Horoscope reveals

In the horoscope, the planetary placements and aspects will reveal the "inner landscape" of a person on matters of faith, fortune and learning. In addition, planetary transits over the 9th house can also ignite interest in 9th house matters. ⛵

In my research and consultations, I found the following areas to be active for persons with a strong 9th house;

1. Receiving timely and good advise.

2. Having good advisors

3. Having strong faith and belief system

4. Having a moral outlook to all matters big and small

5. A constant search for higher meaning.

6. Forming and leading a spiritual organizations (combination of 9th and 10th, 9th and 11th houses/lords)

In general, the 9th house reveals that all people would have their own unique style in relation to spiritual practices and philosophy.

Spirituality- a liberating concept

In light of the above discussions on the 9th House of the horoscope, the following can be said about spirituality;

In terms of meaning, the fact that "spirituality" is not tied down to a particular definition, makes it somewhat of a liberating concept.

In terms of practice, all individuals will have a unique style in relation to matters of spirituality.
